Locksmithing in Pop Culture

Locksmithing can seem mysterious to the average person, and how do locksmiths pick locks, anyways?! Is it really as easy as it looks in video games and movies?

When you ask someone what they know about locksmithing, the answer either involves a story about a time they needed a locksmith or a reference to something they saw on tv.

Speaking of the screen, deep down we all know that movies don’t accurately depict reality; but sometimes we can’t help but wonder. Especially if the only time you’ve even seen locksmithing was in a James Bond film. Without further ado, let’s dive into some examples of locksmithing in pop culture!

Just to be clear– picking locks in real life is not the same as it looks in the media. That being said, lets pick open some examples.

Lock Picking on Screen

Here’s a clip of lock picking in the video game Call of Duty Black Ops II.

First of all, who carries a bulky pick gun around with such limited space? Second, pick guns are a bit of a faux pas among trained professional locksmiths. For those who consider locksmithing a skilled trade and an art, pick guns take all the fun out of it, let alone it could prove dangerous if it were ever mistaken for a real gun!

Next up is my lady Sarah Connor making it look real easy.

Sarah Connor makes it look real and easy while the pressure is ON in this clip of Terminator 2!

While her method is far-fetched, the basic elements are at least there making this the most believable clip so far. Now for the funniest example!

I hope you’re a fellow fan of comedy, but if you aren’t then this clip of the tv show “Broad City” is a superb place to begin! Get ready for a laugh!

The main characters Ilana and Abbi get locked out of their apartment and they have to call a locksmith, who turns out to be creepy.

Tiny Disclaimer–Choosing A Licensed Professional is Important

It’s important to note here, especially for folks who may or may not have in their possession a sense of humor, that while the vast majority of women and men in the locksmith industry are respectful and value-driven professionals, it’s always important to choose a licensed and trusted locksmith. That way, you can be confident your security is in good hands.

Can a Lock Be MacGyvered?

We can’t forgot about MacGyver, so immortalized that the name became a verb. As this BBC article puts it, The Oxford Dictionaries state that to “MacGyver” is to make or repair something “in an improvised or inventive way, making use of whatever items are at hand”, eg “he MacGyvered a makeshift jack with a log”.

While you won’t find any lock picking secrets here, this clip of MacGyver is a throwback that will crack you up! Watch as he just sticks a metal tool in the lock and turns it as if it were the key.

Silly MacGyver!

Locksmithing is an Art and a Skilled Trade

While making a list of things that can be MacGyvered sounds fun, that’s for another blog post, and when it comes to picking locks, don’t count on being able to MacGyver it.
Call a professional and see the real thing! Furthermore, please always choose a licensed, trusted locksmith so you don’t get over-charged or worse, have your security compromised.

In conclusion, real life locksmiths are not spies, thieves, time travelers or MacGyvers(well..they could be MacGyvers) but that doesn’t stop locksmithing from remaining a mysterious art and a fun skilled trade!
